This new, 4–floor, 50,000 s.f. facility was constructed to extend the Chemistry Department at Harvard University.
The building is a steel frame building with a combination of granite, limestone and window wall exterior skin. The Second and Third floors were fitted to accommodate state of the art Chemistry Laboratories and support space. The remaining floors of the building were left as shell space until occupants are assigned to these floors.
The Naito Chemistry Building abuts three existing buildings. Erection of the new facility required extensive logistics planning and phasing within these three existing and occupied Laboratory Buildings.
The foundation of the new building required extensive waterproofing details due to the high water table in the area. The HVAC systems were designed to incorporate the existing facilities as well as the new building. New electrical switch gear was installed within the existing electrical vault while maintaining service to the three existing buildings.
The entire project was completed on time within a 14 month construction schedule.
