The first major renovation and historic restoration of this New York
landmark had numerous challenges. In order to manage a project of this
scope on such a tight timeline, it was broken down into seven separate
projects to be preformed simultaneously. All materials were ordered in
advance. Teams and shifts were created for contractors to prevent any
delays or stoppages in the project.
The electrical upgrade required the assistance of seven electrical
subcontractors, and more than 10 miles of electrical conduit. The building’s
life safety and emergency power systems were brought from 50 KW to
800 KW. Acoustical improvements were made, including the tilting
forward of the entire third mezzanine to avoid echoing.
The entire interior was restored in
authentic detail including all 5,091 seats,
carpet, wallpaper, lighting fixtures,
millwork and architectural finishes.
Original works of art and copper and
gold leaf ceilings, which had been
painted over decades ago, were
discovered and restored. The Grand
Foyer’s “Fountain of Youth” Ezra
Winter painting was restored by a series
of artists to its exact vibrant color
scheme. |
